Water Quality Monitoring

For many years, we contracted with the late Dr. Wally Fusilier to do studies of the water quality and other features of our area lakes. When Wally retired in 2010, we searched for another means with which we could continue our water quality studies. In 2014 we began participating in Michigan’s Cooperative Lakes Management Program (CLMP) in which volunteers from our membership are trained to make water quality measurements and the results are reported and compiled by CLMP.

Water Clarity and Phosphorous Levels

We have been gathering basic data on the clarity of the water amount of prosperous in for Little Portage, Portage, Base Line, Tamarack, Whitewood since 1974. The data is gathered by our volunteers through MiCorp, a volunteer program that monitors key lake water characteristics. Last years data reports for these lakes and Strawberry and Zukey Lakes are here.

With the help of more volunteers we plan to gather data on Gallagher and Zukey Lakes. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit Current EventsĀ

Unfortunately, the data shows a steady decline in water clarity and increase in levels of phosphorous over the years. We can make a Make a Difference.
