Five Best Practices

What we each do matters.

What goes into the water affects what grows in the water—like excess weeds and algae. When it rains, the water soaks into the ground and unless there is something like plant roots to soak it up or stones to filter it, it runs into the lake along with pet waste (fertilizer) goose droppings (fertilizer) grass fertilizers, weed killer, herbicides, leaves (fertilizer), ashes, and chemicals from roofs or driveways. Even smoke from burning leaves affects the water as the smoke contains phosphorous (fertilizer).

BECOME A SHORELINE STEWARD

Each of us can make a Difference. The Michigan Shoreland Stewards Program provides recognition for lakefront property owners who are protecting inland lakes through best management practices on their property.
